Planning Your Social Media Strategy

Before ever beginning a social media marketing campaign, business owners should develop and plan a strategy. A little preparation can make a very effective social media marketing campaign. Here are a few things to consider when planning your social media marketing strategy.

Develop goals and policies
What are your goals? What do you want to accomplish with Facebook, Twitter and other social media? Do you want more customers? Do you want more web traffic? Do you want to create a word-of-mouth buzz?

Before creating any accounts, you should sit down and write your goals on a piece of paper. By doing this, you have something visual to refer to.

Aside from goals, you should also establish some basic policies as to how your employees should conduct themselves online as a representative of your company.  This can include how to interact with customers or how to deal with negative reactions.

Decide who has access to social media accounts
The best way to ensure that you have an effective social media marketing strategy is to appoint a designated social media manager. Additionally, you may choose to allow other employees to assist in posting content.  Regardless, they still need to be aware of the goals and policies. Consistency is the key to an effective campaign.

Keep all those involved on the same page
If you have multiple people dealing with social media accounts, you should be sure they are all informed on your social media practices. If not, you may end up with a very disconnected social media presence, which will most likely come off as unprofessional to your customers.

Consider your budget
Though many social media features are free, there are some social media advertising methods to which some companies decide to pay for.  For example, you may want to consider using paid Facebook ads or Promoted Tweets on Twitter.

After you consider these points, you should be on your way to launch your social media marketing strategy.
